A few weeks ago I participated in a plein air painting event. The weather was perfect, but alas, I was not ! My mistakes were many, primarily because the dark areas in the landscape became opaque instead of shadowy, and the subtlety of the water was lost entirely. So, I came back to my studio , and painted a version on Yupo, which captured the brilliance of the day, and the infinite variety of light on the water. Phew ! Yupo is leading me down a very different path....

Theme and Variations : The small paintings I will show here are themes and ideas that continue to engage me - ideas about color and how the brush makes it's marks. It is my garden, always the same patch of earth, but always changing. And I return to it again and again with pleasure

Copper Kettle / Study
Color! The richness and variety of the orange in the kettle, fabric and flowers are complimented by the blue green of the foliage. To my eye this is irresistible!

Changing the Scope and Intention of this Blog
When I began this blog in April 2010, I envisioned it to be a way to show the small studies I was painting almost daily, my visual version of a journal.
Now because it is the process of painting that engages me and not just it's format, I am going to include in the blog, larger watercolors.
