Copper Kettle / Study

Color! The richness and variety of the orange in the kettle, fabric and flowers are complimented by the blue green of the foliage. To my eye this is irresistible!

Ball Slam / 2 views

Figures in action ! Another in the gym series... I appreciate all the activity, energy and focus that provides this wonderful source material for the painter. And it's a playground for grownups.

Interior

This was painted in the office part of my studio, looking out into the back yard. If I had stood a little further back, it would have shown my computer which is on the desk in front of the chair , but it would also have shown how messy my desk is ! Better to leave it to the imagination.

Backyard Pears

This large watercolor,  "Backyard Pears " will be on display at the Sewell Gallery in Eureka, from October 30 to November 30. It is an example of the expressive qualities that are available when painting on yupo. I hope you will see it in real life at the show !

October Meadow

The beauty of these clear warm afternoons cannot be resisted.  This meadow in Briceland is edged
with madrones, mature oaks, fir trees and blazing fruit trees. Then the sun went over the hill , a cold wind blew, and the magic show was over.

Walnut Tree

Last week, I painted in Briceland with two friends. It was a brilliant, warm autumn day, and I did 2 versions of this walnut tree.

On The Table

This painting represents a departure in both treatment and composition. It is more informal, just the objects on the table, as they appear, rather than the usual more formal still life "set-up ". And it is painted in a looser fashion, which retains a freshness I really like.

Blue Still Life

Oh the artist has such a tough life,  take a bowl of green apples, add a pot of luscious purple petunias and what is a poor artist to do ?

Sausal Creek

This painting of a rocky stream will be in my show at the Sewell Gallery in November. It's a strong image, but I am frustrated because I can't capture the details or color nuance or energy of this painting with my camera - I need a pro !

Brushes and Paints

This still life of my studio supplies will be exhibited in my solo show at the Sewell Gallery in November.  This exhibit will show the work I have painted on Yupo this past year.  My posts of the larger paintings will have to be re-photographed by a better camera than I have, but you can get the general idea!

Beyond the Oak Knoll

A friend has a ranch in the rugged country of eastern Humboldt County, and this particular site is a magnet for the painters who visit there , a cluster of oak trees on a knoll with a view to a far horizon.
This is my version painted on Yupo , and begun on the site, the first time I attempted to paint plein air on Yupo. The technical specifics of this surface make it a challenge !

Overcast at Shelter Cove

It was overcast at the cove that day, and I painted a watercolor on paper, and later, when I came home, I did a version on Yupo. For me this is an example of what the Yupo surface is capable of,  a lively active surface and clear strong color.

Redway Beach

The beachgoers that come to this stretch of rocky sand and river are the characters that act on this enormous stage set. What is the plot of this summer play ?

In the Burgess Garden

A few weeks ago I participated in a plein air painting event. The weather was perfect, but alas, I was not ! My mistakes were many, primarily because the dark areas in the landscape became opaque instead of shadowy, and the subtlety of the water was lost entirely. So, I came back to my studio , and painted a version on Yupo, which captured the brilliance of the day, and the infinite variety of light on the water. Phew ! Yupo is leading me down a very different path....

Toaster and Oranges

Surprise ! A toaster still life .

These simple elements ; fruit ( or vegetables ) and reflective surfaces are  compelling subjects that I enjoy revisiting.  They are painted from life, as a landscape plein air painter will do.  I think of these still lifes as plein air of the kitchen,

Gym Figure # 1 (Lisa )

This is the first of a series of small paintings of figures at the gym. I like painting figures while engaged in their activity, not posed portraits. This interest began in 1987 when I painted the carpenters who built my house, and has continued intermittently since.

Rock / 2013 version

Each year this rock becomes a rock star , and demands to be acknowledged for it's stunning color, composition and overall beauty, in paint. So I comply. This is the 2013 Yupo version. Painted one lovely spring afternoon from my front porch.

Oranges and Lemons

This watercolor is my version of a 17th century Flemish still life  by Justus van Huysum. I have been intrigued by this oil painting for a long time , and decided to try my version. In the original, the color has dimmed, probably due to the varnish , and there are no visible brushmarks . This, on the other hand, has strong color and the marks show, because of different pigments and process.
Fascinating !
